How to Modify Your ESTA Application

After your ESTA application has been submitted or approved, you may find that certain information needs to be updated. Understanding which fields can be modified and which require a completely new application is essential for maintaining a valid travel authorization. This guide provides detailed information about the modification process, permitted changes, and situations that require submitting a fresh application.

Fields That Can Be Updated

Certain pieces of information on an approved ESTA can be updated without requiring a new application. These typically include your email address, telephone number, U.S. point of contact information, U.S. address while visiting, and travel itinerary details such as your expected arrival city or accommodation address. These fields are considered mutable because they do not affect your eligibility determination and are expected to change between trips. Updating these fields is straightforward and does not affect the validity of your existing authorization. To make these changes, log into your account and navigate to the application modification section where you can edit the permitted fields directly.

Changes That Require a New Application

Any changes to core biographical or passport information cannot be modified on an existing ESTA — they require a completely new application. These include changes to your legal name, gender, country of citizenship, passport number (such as when you receive a new passport), and any changes to your answers to the eligibility questions. Since these fields are fundamental to the security screening process, the system needs to re-evaluate your eligibility based on the updated information. Submitting a new application will invalidate your previous authorization once the new one is approved. It is important to submit the new application well before your planned travel date to allow sufficient processing time.

Step-by-Step Modification Process

To modify your existing ESTA application, follow these steps: First, gather your application reference number and the passport number associated with your authorization. Log into your account on our platform. Navigate to "My Applications" and select the application you wish to modify. Click "Modify Application" to access the editable fields. Make your desired changes and carefully review them for accuracy. Confirm and save the modifications. You will receive an email confirmation acknowledging the changes. The modifications take effect immediately and do not alter the validity period of your existing authorization.

Common Modification Scenarios

Changing Your Travel Dates

Your ESTA is not tied to specific travel dates, so changing your departure or arrival date does not require any modification to your application. Your authorization remains valid for any travel within the two-year validity window.

Updating Your U.S. Accommodation Address

If your hotel or accommodation changes after submission, you can update this information through the modification portal. While it is not strictly required to update this field, having current accommodation information can facilitate the immigration inspection process upon arrival.

New Passport Received

If you have been issued a new passport since your ESTA was approved, your existing authorization is no longer valid. You must submit a new ESTA application using the details from your new passport. The new application will undergo the standard review process.

Name Change Due to Marriage or Legal Proceedings

A legal name change requires a completely new ESTA application. Submit the new application using your current legal name as it appears on your updated passport. Traveling under a name that does not match your passport and ESTA records can result in complications at immigration.
